STEM CELL THERAPY PROCEDURE

Regenerative cells can be isolated from various tissues. Some of these possibilities are not yet clinically practicable, and some are not ethically acceptable (e.g. embryonic stem cells).

The stem cell team at Klinik Professor Sailer only uses regenerative cells taken from a patient’s fatty tissue, which are obtained through liposuction. This method has significant medical advantages:

1. Fatty tissue has a very high stem cell count, even higher than bone marrow.
2. Extracting the cells from the belly, thighs or seat area can be done quickly and without complications on an outpatient basis.
3. Patients experience very few postoperative problems and hardly any pain. 

Firstly, a detailed medical history is assessed, a thorough examination is carried out, the medical indications for the procedure are established, and the patient is provided with comprehensive information. The procedure then only takes place after a blood test for infection markers comes back normal.

The extraction of fatty tissue (liposuction) takes place in a standard operating room under strict aseptic conditions. During this procedure, the patient is monitored by a dedicated anaesthesiologist.

Professor Sailer has over 30 years’ experience in carrying out liposuction procedures. By carefully removing fatty tissue, a high number of vital regenerative cells are retained.

In order to obtain a sufficient number of regenerative cells, up to 150 ml fat is extracted. 

The fat that has been extracted is transferred to the scientific laboratory of the Swiss Stem Cell Foundation SSCF in accordance with regulations set out by Suisse Medic. Under entirely sterile conditions in so-called “cleanrooms”, researchers enzymatically separate the stem cells from the fat aspirate. After approx. 24 hours, the isolated stem cells can be used on the patient.
Treatment with the stem cells obtained during this procedure can take place on the same day as the liposuction and some of the stem cells can be stored in liquid nitrogen for up to 30 years for any further treatments. Thus, additional regenerative cell suspensions can be thawed and used on the patient in accordance with the medical indications or at intervals that are suitable for the needs of the patient in question.
